We are the result of many people eating many meals. Our food choices link us to all the other important aspects of sustainable living. Eating fresh food is as important to our quality of life as the daily experience of the garden environment. Visitors often comment they are suprised to find a country oasis in the heart of the city.

Earth Day1999 we started a vegetable garden on the adjacent vacant lot with the help of about 20 friends. Using organic gardening principles, we carefully arrange our crops for optimum growth and beauty.

Considerations include:
crop rotation,
companion planting,
succession planting, and
moon phases
Harvesting and storing crops as sustainably as possible is another challenge to meet. We're experimenting with dehydrating and canning with varied success from year to year. Seed saving is becoming more important with each gardening season, as we discover favorites we'd like to enjoy year after year. Seed saving also preserves heirloom open-pollinated varieties suited to our climate. Worms are the essential ingredient in our garden and we do all we can to make places for them to thrive and multiply because we're so grateful for their contributions.
We're also really excited about our new chicken tractor. This movable chicken coop lets "the girls" travel around the garden in style. Made by a local guy, Elijah Stepp, using recycled bike tires and 4-gallon buckets as nesting boxes, it has added a new dimension of life and fun to the garden. Pictured here are twins, Sam and Will, celebrating eggs and helping to give the hens their food. Their names are Loose Lucy, Forest and Fatty Dum Dum. They each have their own story and personality. At night they are protected by an electric wire that gets its charge from a solar-powered battery.
